Elderberry is well-known as a powerful immune booster during cold and flu season, but this is a plant that has even more tricks up her sleeve.
Black Elderberry (Sambucus canadensis) is an abundant perennial found on river banks and in lowlands throughout our corner of the world. Students will learn plant identification and harvest (including discerning between helpful and unhelpful Elderberry species), and then hear some of the subtler traits of this incredible plant. Together we will finish crafting an Elderberry tincture for students to bring home.
Students will then learn to carve and print a woodblock design involving elderberry with a provided template. Various printmaking papers will be provided but feel free to bring fabric and/or other papers to try.
At the end of class there will be other delightful elderberry preparations for sale just in time to help ward off winter illness!
The class is 3 hours and 15 minutes long to allow for a short break. Students are welcome to arrive 5 minutes early to settle in.
